How spicy food can be an effective addition to your weight loss plan

For those of us that are fans of spicy foods, you may not have known this but you have been giving your metabolism a boost that has helped you keep off a few pounds and make yourself less hungry in the bargain!

Great news - a way to eat and lose weight, every weight watchers dream!  For years people have made suppositions that chili raised the metabolism but it had never been proven by actual research on the body itself.  Now however the results are in.

Several studies had indicated that the consumption of cayenne pepper lowered the blood glucose circulation in the body after a meal containing it, but these were based on animal studies.  This means that there is less of an insulin spike after a meal containing chili.  If you have less insulin circulating this means you feel less hungry and you stay fuller longer after a meal which contained chili.  The consumption of cayenne pepper also increased the metabolism of the consumer for a time after the meal.  But, as stated previously, these studies were performed on animal subjects with the results calculated to apply to humans.  Finally something that would increase the metabolism instead of slowing it down.  Even this small amount of increased metabolism was enough for the animal subjects to lose weight.  This was with the animal’s diets or exercise not changed at all!  They were given capsules containing the chili mix after they ate their regular meals.  The conclusions were the animals given the capsules had an increase of metabolism and an increase of fat oxidation while taking the chili containing capsules.

However, during a study by  Ahuja, Robertson, Geraghty, and  Ball, entitled ”Effects of chili consumption on postprandial glucose, insulin, and energy metabolism”  published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2006, studies were done giving humans meals containing chili and meals which didn't contain chili.

So if you were to consume meals containing 30 grams of mixed chilies per meal, they would theoretically lose pounds by doing nothing else.  Of course in order to lose a significant amount of weight you would need to follow a sensible diet and increase exercise levels too.  But considering that the metabolism increased, it would be a bonus to be able to lose pounds easier.  Plus the fact that you would feel less hungry would also make it easier to lose weight in the long term.

This wouldn't be a perfect idea for everyone, but for those of us who love chilies in the first place, great news!  So eat those chilies boys and girls!  Increase that metabolism, eat a sensible diet and follow a sensible exercise plan.
