What is an e-cigarette?

The aim of this article is to give you an impartial look at e-cigarettes as well as their positives and negatives when compared with traditional cigarettes.

What is an e-cigarette?

An electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette, is a battery-powered alternative to traditional cigarettes that provide inhaled doses of nicotine vapourised solution. bearing the physical sensation, appearance, and often the flavour and nicotine content of inhaled tobacco smoke. In addition to nicotine delivery, the vapour also provides a flavour and physical sensation similar to that of inhaled tobacco smoke, although there is absolutely no tobacco, tar, combustion or second-hand smoke present.

While an e-cigarette releases no second-hand smoke, it does actually produce a smoke-like vapour when you exhale after taking a drag, giving the appearance of smoking a traditional cigarette.

How does it work?

e-cigaretteMost of the current models are automatic - as the user sucks on it, a sensor activates a heating element that vaporizes a liquid solution held in the mouthpiece. The user can choose whether or not to have nicotine in the flavoured liquid solution. In some older models, there is a button which turns the heating element on and off. In many cases an LED light will indicate whether the device has been activated when the user inhales.

What do the cartridges contain?

The cartridge solution is often referred to as e-liquid or e-juice. For those wanting nicotine without smoke, the solution contains nicotine dissolved in propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin - both common food additives. Experts say propylene glycol has had no serious known side effects since the 1950s when it was included in nebulizers and asthma inhalers.

Benefits of e-cigarettes

Common complaints of e-cigarettes from regular smokers

  • Some e-cigarettes will only allow you to take a 'satisfactory' amount of puffs per time period so heavy smokers might be restricted
  • You can get caught with a dead battery
  • Different brands have different flavours and aromas so what appeals to one might not appeal to another
